There's a long story behind this, but basically, I talked myself into organising a suprise party for a 16th birthday. I'd bought various Dr Who kitchen bits on sale just after Christmas and there's the intention to make a Dalek cake using a silicon mould for said party. However, I hadn't used the mould before and since it's quite big (requiring an 8-egg cake mix) and an awkward shape, I had a trial run to make one. It came out of the mould just fine, having made a lemon madeira sponge. Voila!

I took it to work today and let the colleagues at it. General consensus was that it was just a touch underdone in the main body area (abdomen/leg area?) of the Dalek, but that the mix was excellent and generally the cake was good. I think I can afford to put the oven up 10 degrees, shorten the cooking time a little and let it rise more fully before covering the base with foil to prevent scorching. And one of my colleagues is diabetic, so concerned me thoroughly when he returned not once or twice, but eventually ran off with FIVE bits of it! I did remind him to take enough insulin to cope...
